Family Smartphone Contract

1. Our Purpose

Smartphones are tools that can help us learn, communicate, and have fun, but they should never replace real relationships, responsibilities, or rest.

As a family, we agree to use our phones in ways that build trust, respect, and healthy habits.

2. When Phones Are Allowed

  • Phones may be used after responsibilities are completed (homework, chores, etc.).
  • Phones are not used during family meals.
  • Phones are put away during family conversations.
  • Phones are not used during church, school, or important events unless necessary.

3. Nighttime Phone Rules

  • Phones are placed in a family charging station at ______ pm.
  • Phones do not stay in bedrooms overnight.
  • Sleep is important for health, learning, and mood.

4. Online Character

We will use our phones in ways that reflect kindness and integrity.

We agree:

  • Not to bully, embarrass, or shame others online
  • Not to send or request inappropriate photos or messages
  • To remember that everything online leaves a digital footprint

If something happens online that makes us uncomfortable, we will tell a parent immediately.

5. Privacy and Trust

Parents are responsible for helping kids learn healthy habits.

Because of that:

  • Parents may check phones occasionally.
  • Parents may review apps and accounts.
  • This is about safety and learning, not punishment.

As trust grows, freedom will grow.

6. Screen Time Balance

Phones should never replace:

  • Sleep
  • School responsibilities
  • Physical activity
  • Face-to-face friendships
  • Family time

We will regularly ask ourselves:

“Is my phone helping me live the life I want, or distracting me from it?”

7. When Mistakes Happen

Everyone makes mistakes. When phone rules are broken, consequences may include:

  • Temporary loss of phone privileges
  • Reduced screen time
  • Removal of certain apps or social media
  • A conversation about better choices next time

Consequences are meant to teach wisdom, not shame.

8. Our Family Commitment

We agree to help each other use technology wisely.

Parents commit to:

  • Modeling healthy phone habits
  • Listening before reacting
  • Helping guide good choices

Kids commit to:

  • Being honest about phone use
  • Respecting family guidelines
  • Asking for help when something online feels wrong
